Financial Update: September 2018

Hi guys! I'm so sorry I've been MIA for a while... I bought a house! It's been a bit of a wild ride this past month due to that but I'm excited to finally be in my own place. It will be a little while before I'm completely unpacked with all of the decor and etc. in place but all of the furniture is in place for the most part and everything that I need is unpacked except my office so its getting closer every day. That's not the point of this post though, its financial update time!

First up... side hustle income. For tracking purposes, only income that hits my accounts during the month is counted here rather than income earned that I will receive at a later time.

$481.00

This was the pay I received from my very part time work for VIPKID during August (pay is received in the next month, in this case September).

$66.48

I started a series on delivery apps for the blog right before I found the house I have now moved into so the series had to go on hold. A few hours on two days was all I ended up working for Favor as a delivery driver. I still intend to complete this series but it will likely be a little later in the year.

$75.00

I had a few things sell on Facebook Market this month: a 1920's accessories set that I had from a costume I am not keeping, a shirt, a few kitchen odds and ends, an old Kindle, and a foam roller. I will be continuing to sell items on here but I have expanded my "garage sale" apps for next month to try to get rid of items I am decluttering (including a bunch of dance costumes I found while unpacking from my dance teacher days!).

$0.24

I had a sale on something I made years ago over on TeachersPayTeachers.com this month. I may start developing products over here once my office is unpacked and I have a bit more time. I remember it being really fun!

Total Side Hustle Income Banked In September:
$632.72

Notable Savings:

This month there was pretty much the exact opposite of saving money... lots of outgoing money with moving and closing costs especially. Also, the plan to eat out minimally didn't work as well with all the driving around (I moved about 90 minutes away from where I used to live), lack of one single living space this month during the transition and etc. Next month I'll need to buckle down to keep on track.
Progress Update:
Student Loan Principle: -$204.92
Car Loan Principle: -$352.21
Credit Card Debt Change: +$498.10

Credit Card debt did go up as I moved at the very end of the month and I hadn't made the payment by the end of the month but it will go back down. That being said, debt payoff this month was basically a wash as you can see. I am not going to include the new house debt in the difference below but it will be tracked going forward on the progress updates.

Total Difference In Debt for September:
-$59.03

I updated my car's value this month which means a drop in that part of my asset calculation. I'm also adding the new house's value and debt into the final calculation for net worth though which helped as the value of the home is more than I owe (always a good thing!).

My net worth is still negative but went up $2,514.99 and my credit score did not change.* The house still has not shown up yet so this is likely not accurate.

*I am using Credit Karma for estimating my credit score change and Kelley Blue Book (private sale, rounded to the next ten thousand miles up) for the change in worth of my vehicle in these calculations. For house value I decided to go with Zillow for ease of use. I do understand that all of these tools are not 100% accurate but they allow for simplified tracking for these purposes.

The debts include:
  • My vehicle
  • Credit Card(s)
    • A lot of it is from right after I got divorced, moving costs and etc.
    • I have a few other cards but they are paid off monthly at this point if I use them at all
  • Student loans
  • My home loan

Assets are:
  • The worth of my vehicle should I sell it privately
  • Retirement funds
  • Savings
  • My house's value
I am not currently tracking large ticket items that I have (such as appliances, electronics, jewelry, etc.) currently.

Total Debt Paid Off Since June 1, 2018:
$3,694.71

Total Debt Paid Off In 2018:
$ 4,744.96
The next few months will likely be fairly low level on debt pay down as I settle into a new budget and take a trip that I've been saving for all year. Slow doesn't mean non-existent though! I fully intend to keep working towards my goals and keeping you in the loop along the way. Until next time!
